It's That Time of Year!

If school hasn't already started for your kids, then it sure will be soon! There's so many things to prepare for and adjust to after a laid-back, care-free summer. Of course, there's supplies and clothes to purchase, and homework and sports to participate it, but a huge thing to consider is --- what's for lunch?!

A lot of parents choose to forgo "questionable" school lunches in favor of packing their child's lunch, but this comes with it's own challenges. It's easy to fall into the trap of packing quick and easy, buy-in-bulk snacks to add to their lunch boxes - after all, these are the "cool" things to bring. However, many, if not most, of these products are highly processed and full of added sugar, dyes, and preservatives. Choosing these types of foods too often can lead to spikes and drops in blood sugar which is terrible for sustained energy levels, and childhood obesity.

We all remember the Food Pyramid growing up? Well, this graphic has be reformatted a couple of times, and now the USDA teaching tool is the "MyPlate" icon, which teaches us to fill half of our plates with fruits and veggies (focusing on veggies) and the other half with protein and whole grains (focusing on whole grains).
