How to Make Honey Butter Like Your Grandma Used to Make


When I was little, I loved going to my Nanny's house.  There was always something cooking in the kitchen.  The smell of food and floor varnish was like home.

Honey butter. These two words conjure up childhood memories for so many. Honey butter is a simple pleasure that is not as common as it used to be. It sounds like such an easy thing to make, yet few people have the ability to get it right on the first try. What steps do you need to take in order to make honey butter in the special way that your grandma, and so many other grandmas, used to?

Choose Your Honey

The preferable honey to use in good old-fashioned honey butter with the dreamy consistency you remember as a child, is creamed honey. This allows the honey butter to hold its texture quite nicely. When possible, use certified organic, raw, unfiltered honey as it offers many health benefits such as being antibacterial and antiviral. If you are able to find a local honey farm, this kind is preferable as it will boost your defenses against seasonal allergies as well.

Choose Your Butter

You can use salted or unsalted butter, depending on your preferences. Choose organic butter as this is free from antibiotics and growth hormones that are often used in typical commercial butter. When you are ready to make the honey butter, it is preferable that it is softened to room temperature as it will mix more easily.

Blend Together

Mix the butter with a hand beater on regular speed. When the butter has started to break apart, mix in an equal amount of honey. Beat the two ingredients together on low until they become nicely whipped, without any chunks of butter remaining. Change the hand beater settings to high and mix for another 3 minutes. You will notice the blend developing into a smooth consistency, and becoming more and more the kind of honey butter that you remember as a child.

How to Enjoy It

Although you may be tempted to eat this delicious combination straight out of the bowl, resist the urge. Scoop it up with a spatula and place it in a nice serving bowl. The peaks and uneven manner in which it sits bring it some character. Serve it with warm bread or on toast. You can even add a sprinkle of cinnamon on top, or mix it in.

This honey butter will almost instantly become a favorite of both you and your children. When you have company over, be sure to whip up a batch of this for an extra special touch to your meal, especially when fresh bread or buns are being served. Store any leftovers in the refrigerator.
